Medina: The Medina Community Band, under the baton of Marcus Neiman, will present their annual spring concert on Friday, May 5th, at 7:30p, Highland High School Auditorium, 4150 Ridge Road (Medina 44256). Admission and parking to the concert are complimentary.

Wadsworth resident Dr. James Albrecht, assistant professor of trombone at The University of Akron (UA) will appear as featured trombone soloist for the concert in Arthur Pryor’s Thoughts of Love. As an orchestral musician, he has served as acting utility trombone with the Pittsburgh Symphony and was a member of the New World Symphony in Miami, FL. He has also performed with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Nashville Symphony, the Colorado Symphony, the Honolulu Symphony, the Charleston Symphony, and many regional orchestras around the country. As a chamber musician, Dr. Albrecht is a frequent guest clinician and performer as a member of the University of Akron Faculty Brass Quintet and the Sequenza Trombone Quartet. He has also performed with Cleveland’s Burning River Brass.
Dr. Albrecht attended the Buckeye Local Schools and graduated from Buckeye High School. He began his undergraduate work at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and completed his bachelor of music degree at the Manhattan School of Music. He holds a master of music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a doctorate of musical arts from the University of Memphis. He has also attended many summer festivals including the Pacific Music Festival in Japan, the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, CA, and the Spoleto USA Festival in Charleston, SC.
Wadsworth resident Denise Milner Howell, mezzo-soprano, will sing Herman Hepfield’s As Time Goes By from the movie Casablanca (1942) and Somewhere Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz (1939).
Special guest conductor Dr. Gene Milford, noted Karl King expert, will conduct King’s Wyoming Days Intermezzo used in the 2004 movie Hidalgo and King’s march Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite used in the 1952 movie The Greatest Show on Earth.
Featuring music from ‘the movies,’ will feature music from Miklós Rózsa’s Ben-Hur (1959); Meredith Willson’s The Music Man (1962); Henry Mancini’s Great Race (1965); as well as Eric Coats Dam Busters March from the movie of the same name (1955); Klaus Badelt’s Pirates of the Caribbean (2003) and Kenneth Alford’s Colonel Bogey, from Bridge Over the River Kwai (1954). Assistant conductor David Roth will conduct the two selections by John Williams, Symphonic Marches and John Williams in Concert.
Clarinetists Margaret Blasko, Amy Dragga, and Mary Ann Grof-Neiman will be featured in Henry Mancini’s Pie in the Face Polka from the movie The Great Race (1965). And flutists Sue McLaughlin and Amy Muhl will be featured in Franz Doppler’s Duettino Américain, Op. 37.

Medina Community Band is sponsored and proudly supported by the Medina Community Band Association, composed of members of Medina Community Band. The board of directors consists of Dr. Thomas Kenat, president; Lu Ann Gresh, vice president; Gail Sigmund, financial secretary; Amy Muhl, treasurer; Sue McLaughlin, secretary; directors Margaret Blasko, John Connors, Robert Moore, and, Alan Parkhurst.
Membership in MCB is open and there are no dues or auditions; however, members are expected to maintain a regular attendance. The band rehearses on Wednesday evening from 7p - 9p in the band room of Highland High School (4150 Ridge Road, Medina) September through the end of July; providing three to four concerts during the fall, winter, and spring months both at home and on the road. The band also presents their popular summer series every Friday, June through July, in Medina's Uptown Park Gazebo.
