Project: LEARN's Match Wits

Location:

County-Wide

Event Type(s): Fundraiser / Benefit
Organization: Project: LEARN of Medina County
Description: For our seventh year, Project: LEARN of Medina County is hosting Match Wits, a friendly and fun trivia competition for teams from around Medina County. This year’s event is Thursday, April 20th from 6pm-8:30pm at Coppertop at Cherokee Hills Country Club in Valley City.
This year, teams will again consist of up to 8 players, all participating from their banquet table at Coppertop. After a delicious buffet meal (cash bar available), participants will get down to business and try to answer the challenging questions posed by the quiz master. Every table in the room will be participating—teams will again have an exciting and fun evening!
A bonus offering this year will be the opportunity to win the assistance of a “topic guru” for a portion of the game. Raffle tickets ($1 each, 6 for $5) will be sold on site, and you can put your ticket in for the guru(s) of your choice. Joining us as gurus will be: Chef Adam Smith, head chef at Buehler’s River Styx in Medina, as our expert on “Unusual Ingredients”; Professor Dale Laux of Cleveland State University, our expert on forensic science for the category “Get a ‘Clue’”; Retired Judge James Kimbler, serving as our expert on “Famous Supreme Court Cases”; author Martin Gitlin, author of the forthcoming book “Powerful Moments in Sports; The Most Significant Sporting Events in American History,” for our Sports category; Anglophile and librarian Carmen Croghan, for our category “It Came From Great Britain,” about television shows that originated across the pond; Larry Pantages, editor of the Medina Gazette newspaper, who will serve as our current events expert in a category we’re calling “Wait, Wait, Ask Me Another,” about current events that occurred in the week before our event; Wendy Mirrotto, Founder and Executive Director of Kitten Krazy, Inc, a kitten and cat rescue in Medina County, as our expert on cats for the category “Felines and Kittens and Cats, Oh My!”; and Hannah Krumheuer, graduate student in Library Science and longtime Project: LEARN BookShelf volunteer, who will be our guru for “Hooked on Classics,” about classic novels.
Guests will also have the opportunity to win prize packages based on the question themes, including items from local sports teams, restaurants and vendors. A special offering will be an opportunity to win Chef Adam Smith’s culinary services and a dinner for eight, prepared in your own home. Guests will be trying to win the title of Best Trivia Team in Medina County from the reigning champions, Brunswick Education Association. The winner’s trophies this year will be one-of-a-kind designs produced by Antiquation artisan Eric Schultz.
Corporate teams can become sponsors for Match Wits as well as participants in the game. An event program will contain advertising for all corporate sponsors, as well as team name listings and directions for participation. If your firm cannot send a team, you can still support Project: LEARN with an ad in the program. Non-corporate teams of up to 8 individuals can preregister for guaranteed preferred seating and other benefits.
Project: LEARN is facing a significant increase in the number of students seeking our help with reading, math, English as a second language, and the GED test. The new GED is now a more challenging, computerized test, and students need more help than ever to improve their skills to pass the test. Plus, a new Ohio program enabling students who left high school before graduating to earn actual high school diplomas is challenging us to expand our resources to better serve the community. We need community support to ensure we can continue to provide a high level of assistance to all Medina County adults who need our help.
